Grant for accessible bathroom renovation in Vienna: up to 7,500 euros

From January 2026, the city will cover 50 percent of the recognised construction costs, up to a maximum of 7,500 euros. This amount is a one-off grant and does not need to be repaid. Costs from 3,000 euros gross up to a maximum of 15,000 euros per residential unit are recognised. For example: if the renovation costs 12,000 euros, 6,000 euros will be reimbursed. For 15,000 euros, the maximum amount of 7,500 euros is reached, and a higher invoice will not change this. For costs below 3,000 euros, there is no grant. Until the end of 2025, the values were 35 percent and 4,200 euros, so the funding has been significantly increased. Payment is made only after completion and a positive inspection by the city. There is no legal entitlement; the city pays according to the available budget.

You must be at least 60 years old on the day of application. This cut-off date is decisive, not the date of the renovation. The age limit is strict and cannot be circumvented, even with a good reason. However, there is still an option for those who are younger: the Vienna grant for accessible renovations. This has no minimum age requirement but does require proof of disability or confirmation of care allowance from level 3. This option is better in two respects: it covers 75 percent up to a maximum of 11,250 euros and does not check income. For a renovation costing 15,000 euros, that is 3,750 euros more. Even those who have long exceeded the age limit should first check whether they meet the requirements for the accessible renovation.

The city accepts invoices dated no more than six months before the application is submitted. An application is therefore generally possible even if the work has already been completed. This distinguishes the Vienna grant from many other programmes. However, you should not rely on this. The consultation at the Infopoint is mandatory and specifically concerns the technical implementation. Payment is also only made after an inspection by the Department of Technical Urban Renewal. If the finished bathroom does not meet the requirements, the grant is lost, and it is hardly possible to make improvements to a finished shower. The safest way is therefore to seek advice before awarding the contract. For the Social Ministry’s support fund, the application must in any case be submitted before work begins.

No. The city’s information sheet explicitly requires a stepless, floor-level entry for the shower area. A door subsequently installed in the existing bathtub does not meet this requirement, as the bathtub rim remains an obstacle, albeit a much lower one. Therefore, the bathtub door is not an eligible measure for funding.

However, replacing the bathtub with a floor-level shower is certainly eligible for funding, provided that there is a slope, slip resistance, grab handles, scald protection, and a seating option. If you wish to keep the bathtub, you should assess the bathtub door independently of the funding: it costs from around €2,900, can be installed in one day, and is therefore the more affordable solution even without a subsidy.

Yes. Tenants are explicitly eligible to apply, as are authorised users of service flats and leaseholders of small garden houses. However, you will need the written consent of the property owner or property management for the planned renovations. There is a corresponding field in the application form. The same applies to cooperative flats, and if you live in a municipal building, you need the declaration of consent from Wiener Wohnen. Obtain this consent early, ideally before the consultation appointment. Without it, your application is incomplete, and you then have six weeks to submit it. In practice, landlords rarely object to an accessible renovation, as it increases the value of the property.

You will need the completed application form, an official photo ID, written proof of the mandatory consultation, proof of current net household income, and your bank details with IBAN and the account holder’s date of birth. You will also need proof of residence: for tenants, the landlord’s consent; for owners, a land register extract; for small garden houses, the lease agreement or the association’s consent. The cost estimate and invoice must be itemised by position and measurement and must explicitly confirm the accessible renovation; lump sum prices are not accepted. For works requiring approval, you must submit the building permit or notification, and for stairlifts, additionally the completion report and an acceptance certificate.
